LANGUAGE
The official language of the UAE is Arabic. Other
languages spoken are English, Hindi, Farsi. A large number of
the expatriate population are from the sub-continent,
Philippines, Iran etc. So you will find Tagalog, Malayalam,
Russian etc. |

CURRENCY
The united Arab Emirates currency is the Dirham. Arab Emirate
Dirham (=Dhs. or AED) 100 Fils = 1 Dirham. |

RELIGION
Islam is the official religion of the UAE and a large
number of Mosques, places of prayer; are dotted throughout the
city. Non Muslims are not allowed to enter inside the mosques.

WEATHER
Straddling the Tropic of Cancer; the UAE is warm and sunny
in inter and hot and humid during the summer months. Winter
daytime temperatures average a very pleasant 260C and summer
temperatures are in the mid - 30s, but can be higher inland.
Humidity in coastal areas averages between 50 and 60 per cent,
touching over 90 per cent in summer and autumn. Inland it is
far less humid. Rainfall is sparse and intermittent and
receives and average of less than 13 centimeters of rain
annually. |

FOOD & DRINK
Visitors from many parts of the world along with a
multi-ethnic resident community have ensured that a
sophisticated and innovative food culture has developed in the
UAE. Almost any type of food is available, from classic
European to Pacific Rim. You can eat Mexican, Polynesian,
Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Indian, Pakistani, Persian,
Italian, Greek and French cooking, and more, at some of the
finest restaurants in the Middle East. International fast food
chains, serving the standard fare of hamburgers, chips, pizzas
etc. |

ALCOHOL
Alcohol is generally only served in hotel restaurants and
bars located within 4 and 5 star hotels, clubs (but not in
Sharjah). Exceptions are some clubs (e.g golf clubs) and
associations. Restaurants that are not associated with hotels
are not permitted to serve alcohol. Driving under the
influence or being publicly intoxicated is punishable by law. |

CLOTHING
Dubai has a relaxed dress code compare to other emirates.
However respect should be shown to local culture and religion.
Although the hot weather may make it tempting to dress in as
little as possible, revealing clothing should be avoided. |

VISA
It is always best to
check with the UAE Embassy in your own country as to visa
regulations as they do have a tendency to change in between.
Passport holders from GCC and selected countries can stay for
30 days without visa. All other nationalities must arrange a
visa in advance. Hotels can also arrange visa for your stay in
the emirates. |

BUSINESS
HOURS
Private companies
tend to work in a straight shift from 8 AM to 6 PM, although
others may break for 3 hours in the afternoon from 1 PM to 4
PM and then finish at 7 PM. Weekends are on Thursday and
Friday. The public sector starts earlier at 7 AM, finishing at
2.30 PM with their weekend covering Thursday and Friday. Many
business that are located within the major shopping malls work
from 10 AM to 10 PM. |
